Resin 3D Printing Guide

Resin is one of the widely known materials in manufacturing industries and has a lot of applications and properties. It is a very suitable material in terms of all manufacturing processes and material production.

3D printing technology has been one of the most famous as well as excellent discoveries in the past and trending to be the best technology over the last decade. Some of the excellent processes in 3D printing make use of this resin material for the creation of highly effective material for all the industrial manufacturing methods.

Whenever there is a discussion for the materials to be used generally resin will be on top as the most feasible and easily used material in the manufacturing industries for the creation of highly effective material.

Resin is a solid or highly a viscous substance having a plant origin to it. This plant-based substance can be converted into polymers, as it is usually a mixture of chemical compounds occurring naturally.

We have come to a phase in 3D printing and it has evolved to such an extent that we have the options to choose from different 3D printing technologies and make sure to get an intended product at the end of the manufacturing processes.

One of the highly developed processes of the 3D printing is the SLA (Stereolithography) technology which produces detailed materials and also effectively manufactures all of the required materials in the right approach as per the trends in the industrial world.

Even though the FDM (fused deposition modeling) is one kind of the technologies that is widely used for the 3D printing processes, it is just a matter of time that SLA overtakes this as it has to be a bit accessible to people with its pricing menu. Some breakthrough in the cost of the printer later down the line it is sure that the SLA will be the most used technology of the 3D printing processes.

As we have now understood as to how effective this resin 3D printing is, we will look over the different processes that are present in the case of the resin 3D printer and its working as a whole.

Resin-based 3D printing:

As the name suggests here the component used for the process of 3D printing is plastic resin. This is in contrast to the filament that is being used in the case of the FDM type of printing process.

This resin material that is used is either composed of epoxy or a combination of acrylic and methacrylic monomers as its core material. The technology with the resin printers is such that when Resin is exposed to the UV radiation it forms hard molecular bonds and gets converted into a solid structure and turns into a polymer, which is the required material.

In the case of usage of the resin into 3D printing, we will see that two processes are occurring which are Resin-based 3D printing and also DLP method of printing which is a digital light processing method.

Both of the above technologies make sure that when a UV radiation falls on the top of the resin, a molecular bonding is formed and this bonding after drying it becomes the required overall material.

It will create polymers in a solidly structured manner. There is a presence of a galvanometer that takes care of the total amount of emission and once the layer is completely printed, it moves on to the other layer until the whole of the part is created.

But in the case of the DLP method of printing, we will see to it that the whole of the layer is being created at once mostly using micrometer-sized arrays and mirrors which helps in the material creation along with the UV radiation that is emitted in the beginning.

However, the DLP printers in the modern days have used led lightings as it is cheaper and also more accessible.

Why is using Resin makes the 3D print stand out

1. High Quality Resolution

One of the best reasons as to why resins are used in the 3D printing technology is that the products that are made look good and up to the mark.

When we consider the FDM case of 3D printing we can see that the print quality is not so good as it is restricted to the size of the nozzle which extrudes the filament during the creation process.

However, the final prints that come out with the FDM technology are not so clear and have a smooth finish overall and even require a good step of post-processing.

With the case of the resin printing, the designs are very good that even the smallest of the details are widely visible after the print of the material and hence gives an exact picture, precise value to the overall product.

2. Rapid Printing Method

IMG_20191212_102207

When we consider the case of the FDM method of printing we will have to see that the printing processes are slow and will take a lot of time as it is an additive manufacturing process and deals with every layer one by one at a time.

In the case of resin-based printers, the speed is rapid as the laser is produced fast and the layer by layer creation of the product will take place at a faster rate.

Also, in the case of the SLA resin-based printing, we will see to it that there is no requirement of the post-process as the material that comes out is perfect and can be easily packed after a few minutes of cool down after printing.

But in the case of the FDM type of the printer, we see that post-processing is a must as the structures and the supports will have to be removed before the overall packaging of the material to the required place.

3. Easily transportable and used after creation

IMG_20191212_125550

As we know that directly after the printing is done with the resin material we can be able to use it after a gap of just 10-15 minutes after a small dry just to cool down the material.

So the material that has been created over here is easier, is ready to use directly and can be transported to the needed location immediately and do not need any of the post-processing or any process.

But when we consider the case of the FDM method of the printing processes we will have to make sure that we have to post-process the material in order to get the smooth finish and this also has to be done very carefully and in a proper way.

Hence, This requires a lot of time in post-processing of the product and so cannot be easily transported just after the creation as in the case of the SLA resin-based printers hence making it a valuable point to stand out from the rest of the materials.

4. Strong and Hard finished products

IMG_20191201_135955

Especially in the case of the SLA resin-based 3D printers, we can be sure that the products which are created are very strong. They have equal mechanical strength throughout the material and do not break out easily and have long-lasting capabilities and durabilities.

Hence, with the above very important property we will make sure that this resin-based 3D printing is very helpful in the cases for the functional usage of the material as it will not break and can withstand a high amount of strength and pressure as per the material.

Moreover, these resin-based 3D printers have long-lasting durability and can also be used for its functional usage even in harsh weather conditions. They are also used at higher temperature zones even as the outer body of the material as it is a perfect fit for it.

In comparison to the FDM method of 3D printing, we will make sure that there is no equal mechanical strength and durability in the overall created product. This will make sure that it is not the right fit in the functional usage categories.

5. Creation of large-sized product

IMG_20191201_141217

We often know that for the FDM printing methods, they are generally used to make materials of smaller size and dimensions like 250*250mm or 600*600mm and not a bigger size than that.

But in the case of the resin-based 3D printer, we can create material up to any of the required sizes, and hence it is more compatible in the large scale industries for the big manufacturing methods and processes.

Moreover, in most of the cases, we will make sure that it is used for desktop purposes as large-sized materials are created.

So with this excellent application of the resin-based 3d printer, we can see to it that all the customizable designs and detailed accuracy can be achieved with the help of the resin as the core raw material.

This can create a particular required size of our needs at a faster time and also make sure that there is no investment for the post-processing that would take place after the material creation.

6. Various Medical and Dental applications

Resins are used in various medical purposes and dental procedures being the best and the most effective field of it. All the dental products and other various dental prototypes can be easily created with the help of the resin-based 3D printer which is fast in the prototype creation.

It also has a detailed and required precision in order to solve the problems of the patients in an effective and systematic manner.

Various types of Resins used in 3D printing processes

Since resin is the important material in the SLA based printing processes we should know that there are different types of resin materials that are used for the different processes in the material creation.

Generally, all the resins have particular properties as they are made as an injection mold material, have a smooth finish, also give fine texture and design to the finished product.

Also, it has a high amount of stiffness that comes out in the material after the creation process and will make sure that the material will last longer, is more durable compared to the other forms of the 3Dprinting process.

Hence as we now know that resin is such an important raw material in the 3D printing process there are different types of resins that are available for different processes and procedures, depending on what is the major use of the product that one is going to create.

The best types of resins available in the market for 3D printing are:

1. Standard resin

This is the type of resin which is having a very high tensile strength but is very brittle in nature. Since it has a brittle property we will have to make sure that it is used more for aesthetic use rather than the functional usage of the material.

Moreover, we can also see to it that the material created is visually captivating and hence more than often capable of using it for the creation of the art prototypes and other material creations along with miniatures. This type of resin material can also be used for other creation of cats, vases, wall arts, etc.

2. Durable resin

It has a very high impact strength and breaks when compared to the other materials as such.

It is best for its usage in prototyping in the industries mainly in the parts where there are moving elements and snap-fits attached to it. But a drawback to this kind of material is that it does not have that strong strength when compared to the nylon or the other hard filaments.

But it is still more effective in the creation of materials and prototypes on the basis of functional usage and its fit to the industry.

3. Tough Resin (ABS-like)

The other type of resin that can be used is the tough resin. As the name suggests over here, the resin is very tough and has a high amount of strength when the material is created with it.

Hence, it is a perfect fit for the creation of high strength and rigid over bodies of the materials and has its common usage in the automotive as well as the aerospace industry for the creation of its parts.

4. Heat resistant Resins

This is one of the types of resin which is used mainly in the cases where the materials are in places at very higher temperatures and also the materials that will have to survive at very lower temperature areas.

It can actually withstand the temperatures of around more than 250-degree Celcius and is a lot of use in high temperatures, fewer oxygen places.

It is highly durable and should have a lot of strength.

5. Ceramic Resins

Ceramic resins are one kind of resin material, as the name suggests it is made from ceramic materials. These resins have a very high tensile strength and also highly flexible in nature, hence sees its usage in the automotive, aerospace mainly for its functional usage of the materials.

Also, it is used for the making of the engineered models and machines due to its highly effective properties.

These can also be used in the case of aesthetic material creation like vases, wall art as the details of the material are fine and precise. It also has high visual captivity and attracts the eyes of the customers with the excellent shine of the material after the creation processes. There is no requirement also for any post-processing methods with this kind of resin.

6. Castable Resins

These are the type of resins wherein they are primarily used for the making of casts and jewelry.

Since these are used in jewelry, they have a shiny appearance captivating for the user and also it must have a smooth finish to it.

This also has a nice textural appearance to survive in the jewelry industry and attract its customer.

These resins can also be used in the making of the casts and also for the miniatures as it presents an aesthetic look.

It has very low content even after the burnout process and has a high amount of details and precision in it, hence making it more suitable in the industries of this kind.
