What is FDM 3D Printing Technology?

The commonly used 3D printing method produces three-dimensional objects by depositing melted material layer by layer in a predetermined way. Also, it uses thermoplastic polymers as the primary 3D printing material which comes with the form of a filament.

How Does FDM 3D Printing Technology Work?

The 3D printers using FDM technologies are designed with an extrusion nozzle. The extrusion nozzle has the capacity to move over the build platform both horizontally and vertically. Once the thermoplastic polymers reach the melting point, the 3D printer forces them out through the nozzle. The nozzle further gives shape to the three-dimensional pattern by depositing the melted thermoplastic polymers layer by layer.

Once a layer is completed or printed, the 3D printer deposits the next layer by lowering the nozzle. Thus, the nozzle deposits the next layer of thermoplastic polymers to the completed layer. The printers can observe the FDM printing process as each layer of thermoplastic polymers appears as a horizontal cross section. Finally, the material used to support the three-dimensional object is removed after the printing process is completed.
